How To Use Video Light

Using video light as additional light source for wedding photography is one of the best option besides camera flash. Sometime if there’s no natural light, if the environment is almost pitch black or I want to be more creative the video light is my go to answer. Below is an example of how I use video light. For wedding photography I like to use video light for detail shots such as centerpieces or wedding rings shot. The video light comes in handy for this kind of situation. Just like a like bulb it’s a constant light source that you can adjust the brightness. You can mount it on your camera or put it on a light stand. It is very small, portable and can fit in your shoot sac. This video light is called Litepanels MicroPro LED On-Camera Light. You can purchase this video light from B&H, Amazon or anywhere.

As shown below I purposely want the fireplace as a beautiful gold background for the wedding rings. This picture was taken with my Canon 5D Mark III camera and 24-70mm 2.8F lens. The setting was 1/100 sec, F4 at ISO 2500. Scroll down to check out my set up.

I have the house light purposely on so you can see my setup. I have the video light to the left and the camera straight on using the fire place as the background.

The picture below I turned off the house light and only use the video light as the light source to brighten the wedding rings. My goal for this shot is to bring in more ambient light. See the first picture for the result.
