When I was about 12 years old I could never understand why my mom encouraged me to read and write my own culture Cambodian (Khmer) language. Well, 20 years later I could not thank my mom enough how much I appreciate my own culture. My friends are usually amazed when I tell them I know how to read and write Cambodian. Majority of Cambodian American nowaday cannot read or speak the language. If I ever have kids one value that I would like to embed in them is to learn, understand and appreciate our culture. If we can read and write that’s the amazing thing of all.
Below is my culture Cambodian writing style. My awesome sister-in-law bought me a birthday card and wrote it in Cambodian. How cool is that! This is the first birthday card I ever received written in Cambodian. It is very much similar to Thai language. I hope you enjoy looking at the unique characters.
